My Story

In high school, I had no idea what I wanted to do with my life. I was lost and depressed. To save the time of the reader, I prayed then decided to apply to one university to study ministry. I knew I wanted to spend the rest of my life trying to help others, and I still do. When I went to college, my body was really tested. I got very sick almost immediately after starting my freshman year. At the end of my freshman year I broke my tail bone and lost 40 lbs. in less than 2 weeks! My stomach hurt all the time, I was sleeping 15 hrs. or more a night and going to the bathroom at least 10 times a day, not to mention the severe depression. This continued on for a year until finally I was diagnosed with Crohn's Disease: An auto-immune disease affecting the digestive system. Not only did I find this out, thanks to my trial medicine, I found out I had a slight seizure disorder as well. At least I was finally diagnosed. My weight went up and down with the flare ups and new medications. On again. Off again. I graduated and my family's insurance went out, but I felt fine. After a year (not being smart) I still didn't have insurance and got really sick in August of 2007. Lost lots of weight real fast and was in so much pain I couldn't stand or walk or even sit. I found out I had fitulas. They started infusing a medicine called Remicade, and it worked wonders. I had to quit my job and my mother decided to take me in for a while. That was working fine, but I was so paralyzed in fear that I couldn't ever get a job because I would lose assistance to pay for my medicine. That is, until Leah (an old friend I had feeling for from youth group) walked back into my life. She cared about me. She called all the time. She was a friend. It happened that I fell in love with her. We started dating. She encouraged me to move out towards her and get a job. After I moved towards her, she noticed that she looked way too skinny and almost fainted every time she did any kind of physical activity. She went to the doctor and was diagnosed with Grave's Disease: An auto-immune disease affecting the thyroid. ARE YOU SERIOUS?? She luckily still had her parent's insurance for a couple months to get her started, but trying to get assistance for myself in another state proved difficult. I got sick again because I couldn't get a full-time position/insurance coverage where I worked and medicaid kept denying me. I started dropping fast. Soon, I couldn't work, then I just started lying down. I couldn't move without extreme pain. I didn't care how sick I was I still knew I was happy to have Leah in my life. So, I proposed to her for her birthday present in March 2009. I got started back on the medicine I needed, rested for a while, then Leah and I married to each other on August 22, 2009. Things have not been easy. We moved to downtown Indianapolis, where the bus systems are extremely inconvenient at best and we can only afford one bus pass, so I usually end up riding my bicycle where ever I go. (It's getting very cold) We have two cats, and one is a sick kitten. We both have loans totaling up to more than 90,000 dollars. We keep trying to save up for a car, but things happen. A kitten gets sick. We need groceries. Our loan bills. Rent. Etc. Luckily we have had friends along the way helping us barely get by. We would probably be homeless and/or dead without them. Receiving a car and regular car help would be more than a blessing to us. It would be a huge burden lifted. Leah aspires to go into theater, but has to go through HUGE lengths just to find a way to rehearsals. I want to get a job, but if I do, how will I get there without riding a bicycle in the freezing cold? Plus, I have to get an infusion at the hospital every 8 weeks at the hospital. My name is Ryan DeWalt. I want to help others with all of my heart and power, but right now I am the one who needs help. Please vote for Leah and I. We need a car and help taking care of a car. God bless you guys. If you are going through times such as we are. It will end. There is hope. Everything will work out. I hope you get the help you are looking for as we are. Shalom.
