My Story

My name is Rocio and I am from Ecuador. I have 5 years in the United States; I lived in New York for 3 years and now two years in Florida. I came with my father and my sisters tow of them are older than me. Thanks to my grandmother we were able to come to the United States looking for better living and my sisters and I for better education. Unfortunately, it did not result as we wanted since family problems with my aunt and my sister led to separation. Now, I live with my youngest sister who is 16 years old. We moved from New York to Florida for my aunt, who believed that it will be better for my sister and I due to the academic opportunities here. We came with my father, but not for long. Our first four months, we lived with my aunt, but then my father felt uncomfortable so we moved to an apartment with my aunt's help. Even though the apartment lacked maintenance, my father was ok since he did not feel uncomfortable to live with my aunt, but we depended on her since we do not have a car (we still depend on her). In the same year we moved, my father decided to go to New York to work and lived my sister and me alone. He has not come back again, but we talk to him and he tries to support us. We could not handle the situation of the apartment where we were living for it was full of pests and had a lot of damages; we tried to contact the person who rented us the apartment, but she never showed up. We had to go school in tough conditions. We had to walk 1.5 miles to school every day. There was no sidewalk which made dangerous for the cars that passed by a high speed limit. Around the neighborhood was dangerous not just for wild animals like snakes, but people. Sometimes, we had to walk in rain, cold, hot weather conditions for many days, and sometimes we got to school wet and cold for the rain. Our first year was not good at all. Then, due to our hard situations, I lost concentration of my studies and started to work. During summer, we moved to another apartment closer to school for my sister and less dangerous. My sister is studying very hard all the time, I loved her for I hope she reaches her goals of being a doctor. I try to support her as much as I can. Luckily, she found the love of a special person in school; a counselor who loves us as his daughters, especially my sister, and he helps us a lot. However, he is not able to help us all the time which makes him sad to see us in need. As a result of her good grades, he decided to introduce her to a better school call TECO PATHS. There, she hopes to study and get scholarships in the future. It is hard for both of us for we have to wake at 5:00 a.m for my sister to get the school bus and for me to get the public bus, but I have to wait alone for an hour to take the bus. I am in a different school and it starts at 8:15. I am always the first to arrive since I have to take the first bus after my sister is picked up. At the time of my arrival the doors are closed which means I have to wait outside; everyday is the same thing despite any weather condition. I am studying to at least get my high school diploma and start working full time, but there is a long journey to go to reach it. Meanwhile we are depending on my aunt to take us to places since we do not have a car. I am desperate to give my sister a better living and give her comfort. Please, help me she and I will appreciate it so much. Thank you for turn your eyes and heart to us.
